Waterfalls in Grundarfjörður
Grundarfjörður is a small municipality on the north side of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. The wide fjord is surrounded by a magnificent ring of mountains, most famous and picturesque of which is Kirkjufell.
Kirkjufellsfoss is one of the most photographed waterfalls in Iceland, being conveniently located by the side of the road and having Kirkjufell as a backdrop. Of course, for a proper photograph you would want to be there with the sun setting to the left of the mountain or when there are northern lights.
Just west of town there is a very nice waterfall in Kverná. The picture below does not do it justice as half the waterfall is hidden.
A little bit further west is Grundarfoss. It’s about 70m high and can be very impressive when there is good water.
On the east side of the fjord there is a small waterfall in Bárará, not far from the road.
