Waterfalls in Grundarfjörður

Back to overview

Grundarfjörður is a small municipality on the north side of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. The wide fjord is surrounded by a magnificent ring of mountains, most famous and picturesque of which is Kirkjufell.

  • Kirkjufellsfoss is one of the most photographed waterfalls in Iceland, being conveniently located by the side of the road and having Kirkjufell as a backdrop. Of course, for a proper photograph you would want to be there with the sun setting to the left of the mountain or when there are northern lights.

  • Just west of town there is a very nice waterfall in Kverná. The picture below does not do it justice as half the waterfall is hidden.

  • A little bit further west is Grundarfoss. It’s about 70m high and can be very impressive when there is good water.

  • On the east side of the fjord there is a small waterfall in Bárará, not far from the road.
