Waterfalls in Norðurþing
Jökulsá á Fjöllum
Jökulsá á Fjöllum is one of the most powerful rivers in Iceland, flowing 200+ km from Vatnajökull glacier to Öxarfjörður. The magnificent canyons where the waterfalls are located are a national park.
Selfoss and Dettifoss are located close to each other with good road access (and a lot of tourists). The latter is the most powerful waterfall in Iceland at a height of 45m and a width of 100m. You can walk right up to it on the east side, an experience you are not likely to forget. It’s easier to access both waterfalls from the west side.
Hafragilsfoss can be seen from a hill on the east side. There’s a track to it on the west side as well but you might have to get down into the canyon to see it.
Réttarfoss is not close to any road, and you will not see it properly from the west side. The photo below is taken with a drone.
Vígabjargarfoss is essentially not a waterfall any more, after the river changed its course. The location is well worth a visit though, with the cliff after which the waterfall is named being particularly magnificent.
