Dynjandisá and Svíná

The waterfall Dynjandi is considered by many to be the most beautiful waterfall in Iceland. The river Dynjandisá is named after it and so is the bay into which the river flows (Dynjandisvogur) and the mountain area where it originates (Dynjandisheiði).

Dynjandi can be translated as “thunderous” since it can be heard cascading down the mountain side from far away, especially in spring when the ice melts.

Just below Dynjandi there is a series of small waterfalls. In addition, there is another impressive waterfall in the river above Dynjandi called Kálfeyrarfoss and a smaller one a bit further upstream.

There are very good facilities for visitors: parking, toilets, marked paths etc.

The river Svíná flows right by the road where it descends from the mountain, about 2km north of Dynjandi. There is a nice waterfall in it called Gyrðisfoss.
