Hörgárdalur is a long and deep valley, with tributary valleys on both sides. One of the most spectacular geographical features of Iceland, Drangafjall, sits between Hörgárdalur and Öxnadalur. There you can see how a mountain has partially collapsed when the ice-age glacier retreated, leaving behind the jagged edges of Hraundrangi.

There are heavy snows in the mountains during winter so all waterfalls in the area have very good water May through July.

• Syðri-Tunguá, on the north side of the valley, has a nice series of waterfalls not too far from the road. As far as I know they don’t have any names.

• Myrká is well known in Icelandic folklore as the setting of the famous ghost story “Djákninn á Myrká”. There is a waterfall in the river close to the road and two more just upstream.

• Öxnadalsá has a small waterfall/rapids called Bægisárfoss, which actually refers to another river which flows into Öxnadalsá just above the waterfall.
